TEFL China
Teachers of English as a Foreign Language in China (TEFL China) is currently the biggest national TEFL research organization and teacher association in China. It was formed in 1997 and, in collaboration with the National Normal Tertiary Foreign Language Teaching Research Association (NNTFLTRA), spearheaded the development of English language education across China, and has continued to expand its activities in this field. TEFL China used the name IATEFL China from 2002 to 2008, and was renamed TEFL China in April 2009.
TEFL China is an associate of IATEFL. TEFL China's mission is to link, develop and support English language teaching professionals throughout China. From its inception, TEFL China has had an unparalleled record of organizing more than fifty TEFL programme and activities annually. These activities include: English as a foreign language teaching research programmes; the establishment of national experimental schools; teacher training programmes at home and abroad; organizing conferences, symposia, seminars, and workshops; organizing national summer camps and national English competitions for primary, secondary and college/university students respectively; designing ELT materials; achievement testing; and relevant consultancy work.
TEFL China has held four successful international conferences, enabling thousands of TEFL professionals from China and abroad to share their knowledge and expertise. In addition, TEFL China has successfully collaborated with teachers' associations around the world and has actively promoted learning and sharing amongst and between them.
Under the leadership of the Ministry of Education, TEFL China started its first international teacher training programme in 2001. The teacher training programmes have, untel now, benefited more than 1,600 Chinese grassroots English teachers who have received training in the U.K. and the USA.
TEFL China works in close collaboration with provincial and local educational bureaus and schools. So far, 2,600 teachers and researchers have become TEFL China members. Around 900 national experimental schools are also affiliated with the association. This has made it possible for TEFL China to be closely connected with local TEFL practices, and for the centre to produce two academic journals: Foreign Language Teaching and Research in Basic Education, a monthly journal; College English Teaching and Research, a bimonthly journal.
To foster the high standards of TEFL in China, TEFL China regularly administers national English proficiency tests and competitions at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
Through its various activities, TEFL China has become a high profile non-government language education organization with an excellent reputation, not only among EFL teachers and researchers, but also with the education authorities at several levels of government.
